Bulldogs, Yellow Jackets Remain Tied for First Place in Mullins League Play

The Sports Plus Bulldogs and the Short Stop Market Yellow Jackets remain tied for the lead in the Mullins Youth Football League. The Bulldogs outlasted the Mike Thompson Ford – Mercury – Mazda Falcons in the first game and the Jackets handled the Bank of Tullahoma Tigers in the second game this past Saturday.

The Bulldogs played host to the Falcons in the early game. The Bulldogs got the scoring started early as Josh Brandon fielded the opening kick-off and raced 60 yards down the right sideline for the touchdown, but the Falcons blew through the gaps on the conversion attempt and blocked the Bulldog kick. With only a few seconds off the clock, the Bulldogs lead 6 – 0. The Falcons got on the board a little later in the first quarter as Falcon quarterback, Jordan Sheffield, rolled right and hit Justin Brown in the end zone for a touchdown covering 16 yards. The Falcon conversion attempt was stopped short and the game was knotted at 6 as the first quarter came to an end. The Falcons resorted to a little trickery late in the second quarter as Jordan Sheffield threw back to Justin Brown who then hit Brandon Koche with a beautiful pass covering 35 yards. A few plays later the Bulldogs, Zane Price, intercepted a Sheffield pass to end the half. The game is still knotted at 6 at the half.

The Bulldogs kicked an on-side kick to start the second half and got the ball as Josh Brandon fell on the ball. After a short drive, Zane Price busted through the middle for 2 yards and a Bulldog touchdown; the Falcons blocked the point after kick again as the Bulldogs take a 12 – 6 lead. The Falcons came right back and tied the game at 12 when Sheffield started right and then cut back up the middle and raced 40 yards for the Falcon score, the conversion attempt failed. The Bulldogs then put together what would turn out to be the last drive of the day that resulted in a Bulldog score as Price turned it around the right side and plunged into the end zone from 1 yard out, the conversion attempt failed. The score came with 14 seconds remaining on the clock; the Bulldogs win 18 – 12.

Bulldog head coach, Warner Tomes, applauded the work of Sam Tomes and Van Williams on offense and Jesse Kochans and Tanner Hill on defense. Travis Sheffield, head coach of the Falcons praised the efforts of Shandon Hill and Austin Ferrell on offense and Christopher Espy and Tyler Burns on defense.

The last game of the day had the Short Stop Market Yellow Jackets hosting the Bank of Tullahoma Tigers. The Jackets got on the board early as Trey Burks broke several tackles and rambled up the left sideline for 50 yards and the Jacket touchdown, the conversion attempt failed. The Jackets lead 6 – 0. Later in the first quarter, Burks smashed up the middle and rambled for 36 yards and the Jacket score, the conversion attempt failed. The Jackets lead is 12 – 0 at the end of one quarter. The two teams battled through most of the second quarter before the Tigers cut into the Jacket lead. Tiger quarterback, Caleb Olive, pitched the ball to Caleb Zidan going to the right and Zidan pulled up and tossed a pass to Scottie Maupin for the touchdown covering 35 yards, the conversion attempt failed. The Jackets lead is 12 – 6 at the half.

The Jackets came out and dominated the third quarter as Burks added two more Jacket scores. The first acme as Burks broke several tackles up the middle and raced in from 37 yards out, the conversion attempt failed. His last score of the day came as he started right and then cut across the field and scampered 58 yards for the score, Dayton Snipes added the conversion as he toke the ball in the middle and burst into the end zone. Neither team could mount any offense in the final quarter and the Jackets take the win by a score of 25 – 6.

The Yellow Jackets head coach, Jason Dendy, congratulated Hayden Eggleston, Nick Gagnier, and Josh Duncan for their play on offense and Houston Smith, Jake Crabtree, and Astari McCallum for their play on defense. Billy Bates, head coach of the Tigers, praised the efforts of Caleb Zidan and Scottie Maupin on offense and Logan Millsaps and John Gerdon on defense.

The Instructional Division continued with the round robin scrimmages on Saturday. There has been much improvement on all three teams over the past three weeks. Kevin Pearson, head coach for the Stan McNabb Chevrolet – Cadillac Cowboys was singing the praises of several of his ‘Shinning Stars’ after the games Saturday. He said that running back Preston Davis had a very impressive day, as did wide out Ross Sloan. On defense linebacker, Dylan ‘Jack-hammer’ Pearson and lineman Montana ‘Pile’ Driver and David Mareno made several jarring tackles. David Gagnier had several solo tackles and Carson Bishop playing linebacker and Gruber Holden a lineman for the ‘Boys in Blue’ also had good days.

Mark Mullins, head coach for the SIM&S Cardinals, said that his offensive line did a great job as several of the running backs had big runs throughout the day. Malik Bean, Emanuel Williams, Steve Pursley, and Andrew Nelius all had runs of more than 10 yards. He also praised the work of his quarterbacks, Jay Phillips and Jack Uselton, as they both scored touchdowns. The defense was solid with Gage Morrison and Ahmad Taylor leading the way from their defensive line positions. Derrick Pursley, Dalton Jones, Chase Hawkersmith and Dylan McElhaney also had very good defensive performances. Jay Phillips also had an interception while playing in the safety position.

Mark Rambo, head coach of the ARAMARK Titans, praised the work of his entire team. He noted the big runs made by his running backs, Paxson Howard and Brett Schmitz, which was made possible by his offensive line. He also noted the great play turned in by his defensive linemen, Chris Nolan, Brad Belt and Josh Espy. He said that they lived in the opponent’s backfield all day. Coach Rambo also commented on the progress that has been made by Ethan Norfleet noting that he is his most improved player.
