advances in winner's bracket Team now plays for state championship By GEORGE ROBINSON The Leaf-Chronicle Teaching 10-year-old kids the fundamentals of baseball isn't easy, especially when your team produces runs that would make a major league baseball team blush. Tullahoma has put its stamp on this year's 10-year-old Little League State baseball tournament with an offense that has put up impressive numbers. And as much as the Wildcats would love to focus on the little things, it's hard to keep everything in perspective when balls fly out of the park. First baseman Scott Jones cranked his third home run of the tournament, leading Tullahoma to a 8-6 victory against Lawrenceburg Wednesday in the winner's bracket contest at Clarksville National Little League Park. "Everyone out here in this tournament plays good ball," Tullahoma coach Mitchell Wright said. "And we have a strong lineup to compete with, and I think that is a big reason for our success." Jones, whose solo shot came in the top of the fourth to extend Tullahoma's lead to 7-3, bats second behind Grayson Grow. Jones is followed by shortstop Justus Sheffield and Wednesday's starting pitcher James Dougherty. All four batters combined to go 7-for-12 with three walks (including one intentional to Sheffield). They produced two RBI but scored four of Tullahoma's eight runs. "They have so much firepower at the top of that lineup," Lawrenceburg coach Chris Sockwell said. "It's hard to debate whether to put them on or pitch to them because their first three hitters can put it in the trees about 100 feet beyond the outfield fence." Tullahoma moves on to Friday's championship contest scheduled for 7 p.m. Lawrenceburg moves into the consolation bracket, where it will face Lexington at 7 p.m. today. Tullahoma burst out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning after a double by Grow, a single by Jones and two straight walks to Sheffield and Dougherty, scoring a run. Brandon Johnson's base hit drove in another Tullahoma run as Lawrenceburg had to scrape to get back into the game. Lawrenceburg managed to score in every inning, but giving up six runs in the first two frames against Tullahoma was too much to overcome. Jase Carvell had a pair of hits for Lawrenceburg, which attempted a rally in the final inning. With Lawrenceburg trailing 8-6, Carvell reached after connecting on a Dougherty fastball. Dougherty's wild pitch advanced Carvell to second but Sheffield, pitching in relief of Dougherty, struck out the next two batters. Kody Gobble reached base after a catcher's interference, putting the potential go-ahead run at the plate in the form of Kallen Rochelle. But Sheffield shut the door, blazing a fastball by Rochelle for the game-ending strikeout. Sheffield had a pair of doubles while Johnson had two
singles. |
