The A's Trey Burks slides safely into third base during Saturday's Tullahoma Little League city tournament action as Devil Rays' third baseman Dalton Brown awaits the throw.

It was a good night for the favorites in Tullahoma Little League city tournament action Saturday as the higher seeds advanced to Tuesday’s league championship games. A couple of them had a tough fight on their hands.

Cubs 3 Cards 2

After losing only to the Mets twice during the regular-season (they also beat the Mets once) the Cubs had to battle for their tournament survival against a tough Cardinal team. The Cubs rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to recover from a 2-1 deficit then managed to set the Cards down in order in the sixth and final inning.

The Cubs and Mets will meet for the National League championship Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Waggoner Park. The Mets won their semi-final game by forfeit because their scheduled opponent, the Dodgers, did not have enough players available.

Tigers 6 White Sox 3

It was 3-3 gong to the bottom of the fifth when the Tigers struck for three runs to salt the game away. Justin Brown and Zach Lampkin worked three innings each for the winners and combined for a five-hitter. Lampkin had three hits, and Derrick Fisher drove in two runs.

Marquel Hickerson homered for the Sox who got a solid pitching performance from Austin Rogers and Travis Crago. Peyton Phillips had two hits.

A’s 8 Devil Rays 0

The Devil Rays pulled the tournament’s lone upset with a 14-8 win over the Indians in the opening round, but their magic ran out against the powerful A’s.

Brad Roepke allowed one hit in four innings, and Sam Tomes gave up one in the final two innings to help the A’s into Tuesday’s 5 p.m. American League championship game against the Tigers at Waggoner Park. Trey Burks was 4 for 4 at the plate, Tomes had a homer, and Xavier Northcutt had two hits to lead the Athletics’ 12-hit attack.
Ryan Lawson and Caleb Olive shared the pitching for the Rays. They also had one hit apiece.

Following Tuesday’s league championship games, the two winners will face off for the city championship Friday at 6 p.m. at Cascade Field. Closing ceremonies will be held afterward, and all-star teams will be announced.
