Lady Bucks Blast Their Way to Division Championship

The Motlow Lady Bucks wrapped up the undisputed championship in the Eastern Division Sunday afternoon at Motlow, and, as is their habit, they did it in dramatic fashion.
The Lady Bucks (41-10, 17-3) didn’t just win Sunday’s double-header against Walters State 9-7, 6-5—they blasted their way to their first ever division championship with three homers in game one (including a grand slam) and a pair of clutch homers in the bottom of the seventh in game two to overcome a three-run deficit.
Actually, the Lady Bucks wrapped up the top-seed in next week’s TJCCAA softball tournament at Columbia State with the 9-7 win in game one. A second-game loss, however, would have left them tied with Chattanooga State (16-4) atop the standings, and Motlow would have won the tie-breaker. Coach Gary Barfield wanted his first division championship to be clear cut, and the Lady Buck sophomores wanted to win their final game on the Motlow field, which set the stage for some heroics in game two.

Lady Bucks 9 Walters State 7 (Game One)
The Lady Bucks were cruising with a 9-1 lead in the top of the fifth and needing only three outs to win the game on the run rule. Walters, however, had other ideas, putting six runs on the board in the fifth thanks to some timely hitting and some shaky fielding by the Lady Bucks.

Sophomore Whitney Padgett had a solo homer in game one then ripped a game-winning homer in the bottom of the seventh in game two.

Motlow took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Megan Hemmingsen homer. Brittany Lopeman delivered a two-run double in the second to make it 3-0, and a Whitney Padgett homer made it 4-1 in the third.
It looked like the Lady Bucks put the game away in the fourth. Lopeman scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-1, then Duwana Poore ripped a grand-slam homer to give her team a 9-1 lead.
Walters rallied strongly in the fifth to make it 9-7, then sophomore pitcher Sally Gale buckled down and held them scoreless in the final two innings to wrap up the top tourney seed. No team other than Chattanooga State had ever won the division crown.

With their final at-bats on their home field looming, the Lady Bucks came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 5-2. That’s when a couple of sophomores made good on their stated desire to win their final home game.
With one out, freshmen Katrina Jones and Megan Hemmingsen drew walks to set the stage for their teammates’ heroics. Whitney Horton came to the plate and hit a blast to straight-away center field that the center field almost caught at the fence, but the ball went off the tip of her glove and over the fence for a game-tying homer. Whitney Padgett then stepped to the plate crushed a game-winning homer to give Barfield and the Lady Bucks their outright championship.
