The Tullahoma Lady Wildcats battled to the wire before falling to visiting Grundy County 48-45 Thursday night, and the Wildcats let a 12-point, second-half lead slip away on the way to a 60-50 loss to Grundy.

Last-ditch Effort Falls Short
Trailing by three with 7.1 seconds left, the Lady Wildcats took the ball out under their own basket, but Grundy County stepped up its defense and forced a desperation three-point heave that came up short.

It was a tough way to lose the season opener for a very young Lady Wildcat team that had battled the bigger Lady Yellow Jacket squad all over the floor from start to finish. The Lady Cats handled Grundy’s full-court pressure well and got the shots they wanted on the other end, but they shot the ball very poorly.
The two teams swapped leads throughout the game. Grundy County took the biggest lead of the game in the final minute of the third quarter at 35-27, but the Lady Cats seemed to get a second wind and scored nine in a row to take a 36-35 lead with 6:33 left on a pair of Emily Gilbert free throws.
Grundy County again tried to pull away, and a basket by point guard Ashley Sanders put the Lady Jackets up by six with 1:12 left. Tullahoma fought back once more, this time on a basket and free throw by Kristin Vance to cut the lead to 47-45. After Brittany McDaniel hit one of two free throws with 14.7 seconds left to make it 48-45, the Lady Cats rebounded the second one and wound up taking the ball out under their own basket with 7.1 seconds left and a chance to tie, but Grundy clamped down and wouldn’t allow a clean shot at the basket.
