Lady Raiders Slip by Lady Wildcats in Extra Innings

Junior catcher Erica Duke went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored and threw out two runners trying to steal in Tuesday night's game.

The Tullahoma Lady Wildcats and Coffee County Lady Raiders, who figure to be among the district’s top teams this season, hooked up in a season-opening contest Tuesday at East Middle School that lived up to expectations in terms of excitement.

It went to extra innings before the Lady Raiders pushed across a run on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth then held on for a 3-2 win. All but one of the game’s runs were unearned due to miscues in the field, but the level of play for most of the game was outstanding.

The Lady Wildcats got on the board with two runs in the first inning when Renae Shirley walked and was bunted to second by Kayleigh Hood. Erica Duke drove in Shirley with a hit to right field, and when the ball got past the right fielder, Duke rolled all the way around to third. The run scored on Kaycee Marshall’s single to center.

Junior Chelsea Jones (11 strike outs, 6 hits, 0 earned runs) shut the Lady Raiders down on two hits through the first four innings before a couple of errors combined with a pair of infield hits to tie the score at 2-2. Rachel Ferrell reached on an error to lead it off, then Leslie Keele beat out an infield hit. After a popup to Duke in front of the plate, Duke threw Ferrell out trying to steal third for the second out. It looked like the Lady Cats would escape the inning when Katie Hillis hit a ball that traveled only a few feet, but the pitcher’s high throw to first sailed into right field, and two Coffee County runners scored.
