Josh Bryant was outstanding through 5.1 innings, and John Greenwood never allowed the ball out of the infield while retiring the final five batters as the Tullahoma Wildcats gathered a crucial, 6-1 district win over Coffee County Tuesday night at Grider Stadium. The two teams play again Wednesday (today) at 6 p.m. in Manchester.
Josh Bryant was strong through five-plus innings in the win over Coffee County.
Bryant, in his first-appearance after off-season arm surgery, kept the Raiders in check, with the exception of Dallas Holmes' fourth-inning homer, until he ran into a spot of trouble in the sixth. The Raiders plated one run on a throwing error in that inning. Greenwood came on with two runners on base and one out, and he closed the door the rest of the way with a strikeout and four infield grounders.
The Cats took the lead in the second inning when Phillip Heikkinen singled and stole second and scored the game's first run on Greenwood's RBI single. Greenwood stole second, and he wound up giving Tullahoma a 2-0 lead on Bryant's RBI single.
After Holmes' homer made it 2-1 in the fourth, the Cats struck for three more in the fifth. The first run came on a throwing error, then Will Green walked and Ross Daniel doubled to set up Luke Grow who delivered with a two-run single to make it 5-1.
Tullahoma scored again in the sixth when Heikkinen singled and eventually scored from third on Chase Tuggle's infield single.
