Wildcats Turn in Strong First-Round Performance
by Dr. Hunter Norris

Tullahoma held its own on the first day of the '07 Tennessee State Wrestling Championships in Chattanooga, currently in 7th place with 32.5 points. There are 99 high schools represented in Tullahoma's Division 1. Only Soddy Daisy (13), Ooltewah (13), Bradley County (12), and Greeneville (11) brought as many wrestlers as Tullahoma with 11. A team can bring a maximum of 14 wrestlers with one in each weight class.
Tullahoma came racing out of the gate with four straight pins by Wesley Foutch, Will Norris, Ziad Aboulmouna, and Rene Karteron. Then came an equal number of losses putting Trevor Schmidt, Josh Davis, Brett Gregory, and Scott Church on the hotseat waiting for the opponent that beat them to bring them back into the consolation bracket. This is done when that winning opponet actually makes it to the semifinals allowing all the wrestlers they beat to re-enter the competition.
Tullahoma finished the first round with another streak of wins by Cody Quick, Corey Smith and Taylor Roper. This had the THS team in a very respectable 5th place in the overall team scores. The next round of 16 was not kind to Tullahoma where only Aboulmouna and Karteron won their matches with a 2-1 decision and a first period pin, respectively. This dropped the THS team to its current 7th place.
